M.U.S.T. Law Faculty Team Participated in the 2025 International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition (English) Global Round in The Hague, the Netherlands

From 11th to 18th June 2025, the annual International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition (ICCMCC) (English) Global Round was held at the Hague campus of Leiden University in the Netherlands. The Law School team from Macau University of Science and Technology , as the only representative team from the Macau Special Administrative Region, once again participated in the competition in The Hague, Netherlands. The competition was co-organized by the International Bar Association (IBA), the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden Law School, and other institutions. The International Criminal Court also provided special support for this edition of the competition, including having judges from the International Criminal Court serve as adjudicators for the final round and allowing the final round of the competition to be held inside the courtroom, among other arrangements.

The competition of this year, featured 88 teams from 45 countries and regions worldwide. Teams from other parts of China, including Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Wuhan University, and Ningbo University all of which had advanced through the domestic rounds, making the competition extremely intense.

This year, M.U.S.T. Law Faculty Team was coached by Assistant Professor Wang Jia. The team members who traveled to The Hague for the competition were six undergraduate students Wu Luolin, Tang Yajing, Shao Dini, Li Qingyou, Wang Kehan, and Guo Yaxuan. Several outstanding former team members from previous competitions also generously shared their experiences, actively providing valuable practical insights to the current team.

The preparation for this competition began with the release of the competition topic in September 2024. Over the course of two semesters, team members continuously studied knowledges of international criminal law, reviewed reference materials, and managed time conflicts between preparation and academic commitments. Despite the long and arduous process filled with numerous challenges, the team members consistently demonstrated a spirit of unity and cooperation, ultimately completing the drafting of the English memorial. Additionally, prior to the competition, they conducted online friendly matches with teams from the University of Bonn in Germany and Sofia University in Bulgaria, further honing their practical skills. At the international competition in The Hague, the team members excelled in their oral arguments, successfully completing six high-intensity rounds of oral pleadings. Through this competition, the students not only gained valuable experience but also strengthened their determination to further study international law and engage in international legal practice.

The International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition (ICCMCC) is one of the prestigious global moot court competitions. Participants not only master the substantive and procedural law of the International Criminal Court but also experience firsthand the spirit and allure of international law in practice. The Faculty of Law at Macau University of Science and Technology has consistently regarded the ICCMCC as a key platform for nurturing legal talent. By supporting students’ participation in such competitions, the Faculty effectively implements its practice-oriented teaching model, broadens students’ international perspectives, and enhances the global influence of Macau’s higher education institutions. In the future, the Faculty will continue to support such activities, actively participate in international professional competitions, and remain committed to cultivating more outstanding international legal talents.
