Lai Yuan (Doctor of Philosophy in Law graduate)

Looking back at the three years of my Ph.D. studies, thousands of thoughts flood into my mind. It is exciting that I have finally completed this challenging process, but there is also a sense of uneasiness. Saying goodbye to MUST brings a feeling of reluctance that is hard to conceal. Every scene at MUST is as clear and vivid as if it happened yesterday, and now I can only express my feelings through memories. “Time flows like a river, endlessly day and night.” Our task is to cherish every minute and every second of the present and give time meaning. I am proud to confidently say that I have not wasted a single minute of my time at MUST This is sufficient for me. However, it is graduation season again, and we must bid farewell to this beautiful summer. I sincerely thank Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) for providing me with an excellent learning and living environment, which enabled me to undergo a transformation and reap rich academic rewards. Moreover, I have gained many good teachers and friends, who have made me grow with tears in my eyes time and time again. Although all good things must come to an end, it is a small world, so let us gather like a ball of fire and disperse like a sky full of stars! I wish all the lovely, young, brave, and enterprising individuals to write a glorious chapter in life and relish the long years together when we reunite! I wish the teachers of the Faculty of Law to see the world’s scenery, live a generous life, and continue to flourish! I wish Macau University of Science and Technology countless glories and perpetual prosperity for a hundred years!

After working hand in hand for two years, we are about to part ways and start a new journey in life. I am grateful that in these years, I have met so many teachers who are professional and caring about students, and so many classmates who have the same goals. They are important shoulders for me to move forward and fight together, and now they are my knowledge backing to move into society. I express sincere appreciation to the teachers for their careful teaching and cultivation. Their love for teaching and research has inspired infinite inspiration in the students, leading us to travel in the vast ocean of knowledge and the unknown, and ultimately achieving the growth of all of you.

Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) provides students with a significant platform to showcase their talents. Its abundant educational resources expand our global perspectives, and our dedication is evident through various activities like classroom instruction, event coordination, and competitive engagements. As a student in the Faculty of Law, I encountered numerous instances of injustice in society during legal practice, which underscored the limited impact of individual influence and emphasized the strength of collective action. I aspire for us, as thriving members of MUST, to carry this torch forward, unite to support marginalized communities, and uphold legal principles to safeguard ourselves and others.

Finally, I sincerely wish the students to bravely face challenges, the teachers to be talented, and the alma mater to progress and achieve greater glory!

I encountered the Faculty of Law of MUST by chance, but it turned out to be a pivotal moment in my life. Throughout my undergraduate studies at MUST, I discovered my true passions. This was attributed to the inclusive and diverse academic environment and the unwavering support and clarification of uncertainties provided by every professor at the faculty. Unlike conventional exam-oriented education, at the Faculty of Law, educators and students engage in discussions and interactions on an equal footing, following the Socratic style. Unrestricted by textbooks and exams, they merge academic theory with practical experience, scrutinize and compare Macao law and Chinese Mainland law, blur the boundaries between teachers and students in the lecture hall, and welcome the clash of ideas and exchange of viewpoints between instructors and learners. I am profoundly thankful for all the experiences I encountered at the Faculty of Law of MUST, which allowed me to reach the pinnacle of international connections and gaze upon a broader world. Although it is time to bid farewell in the blink of an eye, I cannot forget every mentor, elder, and fellow student in the faculty. Integrity and exploration, enlightenment and innovation, I will always cherish the teachings of my alma mater and mentor, never lose sight of my initial intentions and mission as a legal professional, and persist in moving forward. Lastly, I wholeheartedly wish for the prosperity of my alma mater, the Faculty of Law of MUST, the best for all my elders and mentors, and happiness and peace for all my classmates.

In September 2020, I still remember that day when I took photos of my first day of enrollment with full anticipation to commemorate the start of a new journey at MUST I didn’t know it at the time that I would experience such a rich and colorful campus life in the next four years. Group thesis research in the study room at 8 o’clock in the morning; chatting with classmates during class breaks and going to the convenience store to buy breakfast that I hadn’t eaten yet; discussing the competition in Block R until closing time at 12 o’clock in the evening, but still not giving up and continuing the discussion in the open air in the dark; At a certain corner on campus, I met friends who I knew through participating in academic activities, serving as emcees, sports meets, filming videos for the school, goodwill ambassadors, club activities, etc., and then greeted each other warmly...

In the blink of an eye, I transitioned from a young student who meticulously transcribed my comprehension of legal provisions onto the test paper to a quasi-law graduate who can now engage in well-reasoned and well-founded discussions with the teacher regarding my thesis research opinions. I am grateful to the faculty teachers who guide, instruct, and unravel complexities for us on our journey to knowledge.

I know that the road to the future is still very long, and the years of studying at MUST will transform into profound memories, becoming a youthful time that I can cherish for the rest of my life. To the law graduates of the Class of 2024, farewell! Thank you for all the encounters. Although sometimes we gather and part ways, let us meet again in the sea of people.
