The Welcome Ceremony for the 2024/2025 Academic Year of the Faculty of Law of MUST was successfully concluded

At 12:00 noon on September 9, 2024, the Welcome Ceremony for the 2024/2025 Academic Year of the Faculty of Law of MUST was held in O702, Block O. The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Fang Quan; Assistant Dean, Professor Yi Zaicheng; Professor Cao Xia; Professor Yu Guanghua; Associate Professor Huang Mingjian; Associate Professor Shen Yunqiao; Associate Professor Wang Chuanhui; Program Director, Associate Professor Bi Jingwei; Associate Professor Peng Yunpeng; Program Director, Assistant Professor Xie Gengliang; Program Director, Assistant Professor Mou Xiaobo; Assistant Professor Zhu Feng; Assistant Professor Dai Mengliang; Assistant Professor Xue Wenchao; Assistant Professor Zhou Ting; Assistant Professor Wang Jia; Assistant Professor Zhang Chuanqi; Assistant Professor Wong Weng Kuok; Assistant Professor Zhou Qin; Assistant Professor Wang Wanli; Assistant Professor Chen Qin; Assistant Professor Liao Si; Assistant Professor Guo Yiting; Assistant Professor Man Tao; and Assistant Professor Gao Yang. More than 200 freshmen, both undergraduate and graduate students, participated in the event.

In the speech, Dean Fang Quan welcomed the freshmen on behalf of the Faculty of Law. She expressed her hope that the students would diligently work to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the legal profession while also cultivating the character of a legal professional. As legal practitioners, students must be resilient rather than fragile; calm and composed instead of anxious and uncertain; logical rather than vague and arbitrary; and rational rather than unreasonable. It is essential for legal professionals to maintain righteous thoughts, adhere to the right path, promote justice, and uphold fairness—this is the true calling of the profession. Finally, Dean Fang encouraged the freshmen to follow the example set by their outstanding seniors, make the most of their time, and strive to become legal professionals equipped with knowledge, skills, vision, and empathy.

Subsequently, Assistant Professor Wong Weng Kuok addressed the audience as a representative of the faculty. He emphasized the significance of college life and encouraged students to explore their passions while developing their unique qualities in a holistic manner. Additionally, Assistant Professor Wang highlighted that the purpose of law is to combat injustice and darkness, urging freshmen to become advocates for social justice. Finally, the professor stressed that the study of law will impact both individual futures and society as a whole, expressing hope that the freshmen will become competent legal professionals through the knowledge gained in their courses and will fulfill their inner calling.

Xiao Wangyi, a representative of the undergraduate freshmen, reflected on his journey from high school to university admission and expressed his aspiration to pursue his dream of studying law at the Faculty of Law of MUST. She also encouraged every student to cultivate their ambitions, confront challenges, and diligently work towards achieving their goals.

Lam Hio Tong, a representative of the new graduate students, expressed his passion for the law and his eagerness for knowledge. She hoped that the students would not only pursue the formal correctness of the law but also seek its underlying morality and justice. Additionally, she urged students to value their time in school, collaborate in their studies, and become a driving force for social progress.

At the welcome ceremony, Associate Professor Peng Yunpeng and Assistant Professor Zhou Ting met with the freshmen as class tutors for the academic year and provided a brief introduction to the university’s “Mentorship Programme”. Assistant Professor Wang Jia presented the faculty’s academic and competitive activities, outing exchanges, and various scholarships specifically offered by the Faculty of Law. She encouraged students to actively participate, seize opportunities to enhance their overall capabilities, and better prepare for future challenges.

Ren Yixuan, president of the Faculty of Law Students’ Association, introduced the mission and activities of the association and expressed her commitment to serving both the faculty and her fellow students. She encouraged freshmen to actively participate in the association to help cultivate a vibrant campus life.

At the welcome ceremony, the Faculty of Law recognized students who made outstanding contributions to the work and honor of the faculty during the 2023/2024 academic year. Dean Fang Quan awarded the Service Commendation Certificate and the Competition Commendation Certificate to students who stood out in both character and academics, actively participated in faculty activities and academic competitions, assisted with faculty work, and demonstrated a willingness to serve their classmates. Filled with joy, the Welcome Ceremony for the 2024/2025 Academic Year of the Faculty of Law of Macau University of Science and Technology concluded successfully.
